CSA day is here again! Now we are into the vegetables perhaps some of you thought you would be getting all along in your Summer share. We hope you enjoyed the bounty of late spring and early summer. One of the many perks of being a CSA member — your share will help you learn what is truly in season in your local environment.
New to the rotation this week: Japanese slicing cucumbers and New Zealand spinach.
 We hope you love these cukes as much as we do! While they are rather strange looking, this is hands-down our favorite variety to grow. After rinsing, you will notice all the little spines come off…if you dare, don’t bother peeling your cucumber and prepare to be pleasantly surprised at how tender the skin is. We would also encourage you to resist deseeding your cucumber, as the seeds are also very tender, if apparent at all. Call us lazy, but these attributes plus beautiful mild flavor are what make ‘Suyo’ our favorite to eat! They are most comparable to English cucumbers.
As you may have noticed, spinach has not been available from the farm since mid-spring. Spinach loves cold weather and will not grow properly in summer. This season, we are experimenting with a new heirloom vegetable, New Zealand spinach (Tetragonia expansa). Discovered in Queen Charlotte Sound, New Zealand, by British botanist Sir Joseph Banks who sailed with Captain Cook’s first voyage to the South Pacific. Although not a true spinach, NZ spinach loves the heat and can be cooked in all the same ways you enjoy winter spinach. It’s not bad raw, either. Loaded with vitamin C. Happy Wednesday! All of this summer heat and rain is starting to show in our warm weather crops! Some new faces in your box this week. Like last week, you will not find your tomatoes nor basil in your box, but somewhere near where you pick up your share. Small shareholders, you get 2 beefsteak tomatoes and one bunch of basil. Large shareholders get 4 beefsteak tomatoes and one bunch of basil.  We hope you have fun with these ingredients, here are some ideas to get you started.

Happy Wednesday, again! Another beautiful share of certified organic produce is coming your way. Fun fact — we weighed a large CSA share after packing the boxes this morning and it was a hefty twelve pounds! (This is not the heaviest, we have had boxes weigh as much as twenty two pounds in recent memory!) In other words, we hope you are enjoying all of your produce, but if you feel a bit overwhelmed by veggies, that is pretty natural. We would encourage you to share your share! Maybe some family members or neighbors would enjoy items you feel you just can’t get to. Another good trick is to stock pile root veggies (like kohl rabi, beets, and cabbage — to a certain extent) that will store for months in your refrigerator until you have some down time to process them for the long winter ahead. Pickled beets and pickled kohl rabi are both excellent ways to brighten up winter salads and cheese plates. Maybe branch out and try something new; homemade sauerkraut is simple, delicious, and naturally loaded with probiotics.

*Perhaps most importantly, there are some things that we just refuse to refrigerate here at the farm, and tomatoes are at the top of that list. As we come into tomato season, your tomatoes for a given week will not be in your box, but somewhere nearby. If you pick up at the garden center in Cecilton, we will have your tomatoes in the farmstand (as ever, an employee would be happy to help if you need it). If you pick your share up at one of our other locations, you will see your tomatoes nearby! Be sure to read any accompanying signs and take the right container or amount for your share size*.
