Fall CSA 2017 Week 2

A nice box full of leafy greens to complement your hearty fall fare. When you arrive at your CSA pickup location this week, look for your tomatoes nearby. We do not refrigerate tomatoes, so they don’t go into the boxes. Small shareholders, take a 1/2 pint, large shareholders, take a pint. These are the very last tomatoes of the season, so we hope you enjoy having them. We also request that you be sure to check your name off on the list at your pickup location, so we can keep track of who has received their share, and who has not.

New Zealand spinach is not spinach at all, but native to New Zealand and happiest in hot weather when we cannot grow regular spinach (which likes cold weather!) New Zealand spinach is best cooked or whizzed into your favorite juice or smoothie — it has a funny aftertaste when eaten raw. Nutritionally, it is very similar to spinach and will most certainly prevent scurvy in your family.

People always remark on how different our arugula looks compared to that in the grocery store. Most arugula in stores is ‘baby’, meaning it is younger and markedly less spicy. We hope you enjoy this ‘adolescent’ arugula which has more of a kick!

Spicy salad mix is a melange of baby mustard greens, baby red russian kale, tatsoi, and arugula. Some of these greens are spicy, some are milder. This mix is great in a salad, or try it chopped and wilted into some of your favorite recipes. I like to add it to a bowl of brothy soup just before eating. Whatever you do with your share this week, we hope you enjoy it, and thank you for your support of our small family farm and garden center!

Fall CSA 2017 Week 1!

Happy Fall! And welcome to our Fall CSA. An edible treasure chest, your CSA box has all the colors for rainbow eating this week. A few tips on the contents:

Celery – may look a bit different than you are used to, but a bit of this superb aromatic goes a long way. Try some in your favorite soup recipe and prepare to feel like a million bucks.

Edamame – “I’ve never seen fresh!” Is the #1 comment we get at the farmers market for this healthy snack. To prepare, pop the pods off the stems (a great job to keep the kids busy!), wash well, and steam or boil for 10-15 minutes. Serve with a light sprinkling of salt. Edamame makes a great snack, because you are actively popping the beans out of their tough pods, it keeps your hands and mouth very busy! Also, loaded with protein.

Radicchio – This variety (‘Perseo’) looks a bit different than your classic radicchio, but it is a fabulous bitter green that hold up well in a salad with sweet and pungent pals. Try some with bleu cheese and some sliced Asian pear.

Sweet vs. Hot Peppers – Your sweet peppers this week are banana and ‘Carmen’ a long red variety. Your hot peppers are jalapeno, habanero, scotch bonnet, or ghost peppers. They are quarantined in a plastic produce bag, so you cannot mistake them for sweet peppers. Also, most of the hot peppers are smaller than your thumb, while the sweet peppers are much larger. If hot peppers are not your thing, we will not be offended if you pass them along to your spice loving friend at work — they do not show up in CSA boxes often 🙂

Asian pears – are a delightful fall treat that are reminiscent of both pears and apples. Crunchy and sweet, they store well in your crisper drawer.

Summer CSA 2017 Week 22

Ahhhh, it’s here…the 22nd, and final, week of the summer CSA. You made it!

Leafy greens are becoming more abundant with the cooler weather. We love this time of year when summer and fall crops overlap. So much room for culinary creativity, and so many good things on the way. Kale, romaine, buttercrunch, rainbow carrots, radishes, spinach, broccoli, brussels sprouts, turnips, rutabaga, to name a few. Mouth watering? Good.
